Public speaking is a life skill that is used on many occasions. Our school’s older students get many opportunities to speak in front of small groups, class peers and the school. As leaders, students are also expected to speak at Awards Nights and special events such as ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day and in thanking visitors.
St Joseph’s school students have been involved in the Small Schools Speaking Competition. This enables the students to gain confidence in speaking in front of a wider audience than just their peers in the class. It also involves practice and dedication in preparing a speech for a specific audience. They learn to use their voice, both with pitch and tone, appropriate movement and gestures to enhance their speeches and to organise their speech into an opening, body and conclusion. Finally it is a further stepping stone to High School Speaking and Debating.
